The Model United Nations Club is a group of students interested in global issues and the state of the world as it is today. Poverty, famine, AIDS, and war are just a few of the issues club members sign up to discuss and attempt to correct at yearly conferences, and even here at school.
The pinnacle of the year to this club is the conference in January, where students who have been assigned the role of certain countries devise solutions to various global concerns.
Bringing these topics down to a smaller scale and preparing students for the intense debates can be a difficult job, but this year’s elected club officials are certainly up for the challenge.
Club president senior Giuliana Truppi, vice president senior Jenny Zhang, secretary senior Kim Greco, treasurer junior Matt Rotolo, and Fundraising Chair senior Rishi Singhal have already begun planning for the trip and spreading their enthusiasm throughout the club. In the near future are fundraising projects such as bake sales, Powder Puff taco sales and international food sales.
“I am so excited to work with my fellow officers this year. We’ve always been a close-knit club but this yearm we hope to get even closer. We’ve got a lot planned,” said Truppi.
In the hopes of bringing the club closer together, the officers have planned numerous club debates and research sessions, and a freshman-senior advice system designed to bridge the gap between underclassmen and upperclassmen.
Club advisor Ms. Anya Szlachtianchyn has high expectations of the new officer team. “I am very excited about this year’s officers. The Model UN members selected reliable, hardworking and positive officers. Each officer brings a unique characteristic to the table. They are a great service to me and will do a great service for our club,” said Szlachtianchyn.
