LORRAS FASHION ARTICLEAnother February, another round of Fashion Weeks. New York Fashion Week has come and gone, and left are its remnants of upcoming trends for this fall. After designers made their rounds at the annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, this fall’s trends are now evident.
The summary of this winter’s New York Fashion Week? The bigger, the better.
Opulence is a big trend this season. From sequins and lace to tulle and velvet; there were tons of gorgeous fabrics that went down the catwalk. To keep looks from going overboard, designers ensured that their intricate and glamorous garments were not outshined by the remainder of the look. Designers showcased beautiful pieces played down with minimal accessories. Donna Karan revealed a handful of down beautiful, black silk gowns with long hem lengths and sequined fabrics.
Furs are another hit this fall. Gone are the days of your mother’s full-length brown mink. Nowadays, furs are offered in a slew of different length, shapes and colors. Ralph Lauren sent a fur capelet down his runway, and J. Mendel featured a leather coat covered in an ombre of furs. An article of fur adds luxury to any outfit, making it the perfect winter accessory to add a touch of opulence to your look.
The midi length is the length to emulate not just this season, but for seasons to come. This lady-like trend proves that style is moving in a more feminine direction. The look is reminiscent of the 1920s and regardless of whether it’s done in a full or fitted bottom, designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Marchesa proved it is the hem length of the season.
Living in New Jersey, you really can’t get around this winter without wearing a coat. Luckily for us Northern inhabitants, coats this year are anything but boring. Hugo Boss sent a beautiful, floor-length navy trench coat down his runway, and Kate Spade released a feather-lined jacket.
There were many different colors went down the runway this season, but white and blue appears to be the color combination of the moment. Whites were vibrant, and even when mixed with other colors, they stood out. White was commonly paired with blue. Every shade of blue showcased was vibrant and rich, adding character to many looks. Prime examples of this color combination were Oscar de la Renta’s navy, sequined gown paired with a royal blue fur coat, and Carolina Herrera’s royal blue pantsuit matched with a white fur scarf.
Let’s be real – no one at North is going to call up Karl Lagerfeld and ask for something off of the Chanel runway. But local fast fashion chains, such as H&M, Forever 21, and Zara hire young designers to make pieces modeled off from what high fashion houses produce. Any of these stores would be a great place to find cute, affordable items similar to those mentioned. Faux fur is a cost-effective and ethical alternative to the fur coat trend, as well as both basic and opulent. Bold pieces can be found, depending on the level of embellishment.
This season is clearly about making a big statement. With attention-catching looks and luxury being this season’s biggest trends, it is definitely in right now to stand out.
